Understanding Vertigo & Dizziness
Dizziness and vertigo can have several different causes. Identifying the pattern and underlying cause is important when determining the appropriate next step.
Possible Causes
Common Causes of Dizziness
BPPV
Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is generally described as brief episodes of vertigo associated with changes in head position, such as rolling over in bed or looking up.
Ménière's Disease
An inner-ear disorder that may involve episodes of vertigo along with hearing-related symptoms such as fluctuating hearing, ear fullness or noise in the ear.
Vestibular Migraine
Dizziness or vertigo that may occur in association with migraine-related mechanisms, sometimes with or without a headache.
Orthostatic Hypotension
Dizziness that can occur when blood pressure drops after standing up. This type of dizziness does not originate in the ear.
Not every type of dizziness originates from the ear. Some causes are related to blood pressure, medications, neurologic conditions or other medical factors, and your physician will determine what evaluation may be appropriate.
Next Steps
ENT Evaluation
An evaluation can help determine whether your symptoms may be related to an ear or balance condition, or whether additional medical evaluation may be appropriate. Dizziness is not diagnosed online, and your physician will determine the appropriate next step.
