Understanding Ear Infections
Ear infections can affect different parts of the ear and may have different causes. An ENT evaluation can help determine what type of ear problem is present and which treatment options may be appropriate.
Types
Types of Ear Infections
These general descriptions are for education only. Your physician will determine what is present and which treatment options may be appropriate for you.
Otitis Media
This term generally refers to inflammation or infection involving the middle ear, the space behind the eardrum. It may be associated with ear discomfort, pressure or temporary changes in hearing.
Otitis Externa
This affects the ear canal itself and is sometimes called swimmer's ear. Moisture, irritation or injury to the canal skin may contribute to it.
Candidal Otitis Externa
Fungal organisms such as Candida can sometimes contribute to inflammation or infection of the ear canal. An in-office examination may help identify this pattern.
Chronic Otitis Externa
Some patients develop persistent or recurring inflammation of the ear canal. Ongoing or repeated symptoms may benefit from evaluation by an ENT specialist.
Evaluation
When to See an ENT
Ear symptoms cannot be diagnosed online. Consider scheduling an evaluation if you notice:
- Persistent ear discomfort
- Drainage from the ear
- Recurring ear infections
- Swelling in or around the ear
- Changes in hearing
- Symptoms that do not resolve
