Nose & Sinus

Nasal Congestion & Nasal Obstruction

A blocked, stuffy nose is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Several different conditions can restrict nasal airflow, and more than one can be present at the same time. Identifying the cause is the first step toward the right treatment.

Evaluation

How the Cause Is Identified

Because several conditions cause similar symptoms, an in-office ENT evaluation is used to narrow things down.

Symptom Review

Whether blockage is one-sided or both sides, worse at night, seasonal or constant, and what has already been tried.

Nasal Examination

Examination with a nasal speculum and, when appropriate, nasal endoscopy to view the deeper nasal passages.

Airflow & Sidewall Assessment

Assessment of the nasal sidewall and internal nasal valve during breathing.

Imaging When Appropriate

CT imaging may be ordered when sinus disease or anatomy needs further evaluation.

Medications such as nasal steroid sprays are often tried first. Because a deviated septum is a physical abnormality, no medication can permanently correct it.
