Nasal Polyps
Nasal polyps are soft, non-cancerous growths of swollen nasal and sinus lining. They form from long-standing inflammation and can block nasal airflow, reduce the sense of smell and contribute to recurring sinus problems.
Symptoms
What Nasal Polyps Can Feel Like
Small polyps may cause no symptoms at all. Larger polyps are more likely to affect breathing and smell.
Persistent Nasal Blockage
A constantly stuffy nose that does not fully clear, often on both sides.
Reduced or Lost Sense of Smell
A decreased sense of smell and taste is one of the most common signs.
Recurring Sinus Infections
Sinus infections that keep returning or never fully resolve.

Pressure across the face and ongoing post-nasal drainage.
Causes
Why Polyps Form
Polyps develop when the lining of the nose and sinuses stays inflamed over a long period. The swollen lining gradually expands into soft, teardrop-shaped growths.
Chronic sinusitis, allergies, asthma and sensitivity to aspirin or other anti-inflammatory medications are associated with polyp formation in some patients. Polyps are not cancer, but any growth inside the nose should be evaluated by a physician.
Evaluation & Treatment
How Nasal Polyps Are Managed
Treatment is aimed at reducing inflammation, restoring airflow and preventing polyps from returning.
Nasal Endoscopy
An in-office endoscopic examination allows the nasal passages and polyps to be viewed directly.
CT Imaging
Sinus CT imaging may be ordered when medically appropriate to assess the extent of disease.
Medical Therapy
Nasal steroid sprays, saline rinses, allergy management and, in selected cases, oral steroids or biologic medications prescribed by your physician.
Endoscopic Sinus Surgery
When symptoms persist despite appropriate medical therapy, image-guided endoscopic sinus surgery to remove polyps and open the sinuses may be a treatment option.
Polyps can return over time, so ongoing medical therapy after treatment is often recommended. Your physician will determine what may be appropriate for you.
